Feltwell Historical & Archaeological Society

The Society was founded in October 1966 by the late Mr A. J. (Pip) Orange who had spent many years compiling notes and collecting archaeological material which had been found or excavated within the Feltwell Parish boundaries.

In view of the wealth of available historical and archaeological material relating to the village Mr Orange suggested that the time had come when the research into Feltwell history should be shared and enjoyed by other interested people in the Parish.

The Inaugural Meeting was held on Friday 28th October 1966 in the Oak Hotel, Feltwell, when thirty-three people attended and the aims and objects of the Society were outlined as follows:-

1. To encourage the people of Feltwell to take more interest and pride in their own locality.

2. To assist wherever possible in the improvement of the appearance and amenities of the village of the village.

3. To preserve that which is best within the Parish and to work in co-operation with the Parish Council.

4. To organise the collection of items of historical or archaeological interest relating to the village of Feltwell with the eventual aim of establishing a Feltwell Museum.

5. To collect and maintain records of the Parish of Feltwell.

Mr Orange remained Chairman of the Society until 1989 when he retired due to ill health. He then became Life President until his death in 1990. The Society is now entering its thirty-third year which is quite an achievement for a village the size of Feltwell.

The Chairman for the past the years has been Mr Ken Stowell and the current membership is approximately fifty people, of which twenty-five regularly attend the monthly meetings.

The Society are the Trustees for the now redundant St. Nicholas Church and an annual Patronal Service is held in June, and a Candlelight Carol Service in December of each year.

The Feltwell Museum was opened in April 1998 and now houses the records, old photographs and artefacts of the Society. The Museum is open from April to October when the public can visit on a Tuesday or Saturday between 2:00pm and 4:00pm. Organised visits outside these times can be arranges by contacting the Chairman.
